B Team
At last the boys game of the park with all 3 points in a difficult game on a bumpy, uneven pitch - which gave neither side much joy.
Sturt began brightly and had the Jets defending in their last 1/3 for the first 15 mins, but with no real resulting shot on goal. The Jets began to get some foot on the ball and had Sturt chasing for a while. Midway through the half play came down the left wing where we found space for Haydos to get to the line and square a ball to an unmarked Patritti on the penalty spot. Somehow the ball got stuck between his legs with only the out of position keeper to beat. By the time the ball was under control the opportunity had gone as the relieved keeper smothered the ball at his feet.
The Jets had their own chance when a long ball was played through, but the pace of the pitch took the ball away from the striker and into the arms of the Sturt keeper Tom Beatty just before his midriff was introduced to the strikers shoulder and left him winded [and squealing like stuffed pig ED] on the ground.
HALF TIME:- MODBURY JETS 0 - 0 STURT MARION
The half time talk reminded them what had happened last game v. St. Peters when we went in 0 - 0 at half time and lost 4 - 1, which we did not want a repeat.
Sturt went forward and put a tiring Jets backline under more pressure and when a ball was played into the box the Jets could not get it away and Sturt had 3 bites of the cherry before Clarke received the ball just inside the box and fired in a scuffed shot that found it's way through a crowded 6 yd area and into the bottom corner of the goal.
The Jets went down to 10 men when one of the players went off through injury and having used their substitutes could not attack Sturt's ever tightening midfield and defence.
Numerous chances came but we just did not put them away - many being cleared by the Jets central defenders.
All in all a welcome 3 points but we have to ne hungry and sharper when chances come our way.
