Round 4

THUNDER QUELLS SOUTHERN BREAKERS

The Sturt Marion gThunderh Soccer Club travelled to Port Elliot Oval last week to face local side Southern Breakers.

Two close contests in the gAh and gBh team games provided tight score lines showing a 2 ? 0 result in favour of the visiting gThunderh.

Goal scorers for the reserves were Jim Stevenson who found the net after 20 minutes and Mark Ross who scored the sealing goal two minutes from full time in a hard fought and tense encounter.

The Sturt Marion gAh team controlled the home side as the final score really failed to show their dominance.

Terry Hayes started and finished a driving midfield run on 17 minutes after good link play by skipper Steve Hoyland.

Hayes shot accurately and low from 18 metres past the home side's keeper.

gVeteranh striker Rick Piotrowski was soon after upended in the penalty area as Hoyland drove home the resultant spot kick off the inside of the left side post.

Sturt's team shape and individual performances was fluent and mobile and should have lead to further score line additions.

gThunderh went to the half time break after further near misses featured a goal line clearance and a shot which rebounded off the post which kept gBreakersh in the game at 2 ? 0.

The second half produced a plethora of chances as posts were further hit and the home team's keeper made special and reflex saves to keep out the likes of Alec Rolston, Daniel Butler and Dave Jonchef who should have tripled the earlier score.

A bit of gniggleh and the usual gverbalsh encourages by the gBreakersh spoilt gSturt Marionh play making in a stop start closing 15 minutes. It was then left to gThunderh keeper gScott Matesh to keep the score intact as he made two wonderful reactive saves from close range as gBreakersh tried to reduce the deficit.

A comfortable win and a further three points keeps Sturt Marion joint top of the league with undefeated rivals Flinders University.

The C grade started their season with a 1-1 draw with FC Adelaide, with Lee the scorer.

Sturt Marion are playing away again next week as they visit Adelaide University at Frome Road in the City. All 3 teams are playing at the same location so should make for a good afternoon with a big crowd!
